The Lonely Island Remain a Sushi Glory Holy Comedic Force
A recent Digital Short and their current podcast with Seth Meyers is a reminder of just how funny -- and musically catchy -- the trio is.
I’ve recently been on something of a Lonely Island kick again and it’s all because of “Sushi Glory Hole.” The recent surprise Digital Short on Saturday Night Live – the first we’ve seen since 2018’s “Natalie’s Rap 2,” among the scattered times a Digital Short has popped up since the Lonely Island exited SNL – was another instant classic. A song performed by two dudes in suits (Akiva Schaffer and Andy Samberg) pitching their idea for “sushi being fed through a hole in a wall” is classic Lonely Island - funny, lewd and with a genuinely banging beat.
I’ve probably listened to “Sushi Glory Hole” 20 times in the weeks since it debuted (the line “There's a chance you're gonna get a dick but it's worth it 'cause the quality of fish” is pure poetry) but it also got me to finally begin listening to The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, which debuted earlier this year. If you’re a fan of The Lonely Island, it’s probably a no brainer, but if you’re also simply an SNL fan who finds the process of how that show is made continually fascinating, I highly recommend this podcast. Meyers and the Lonely Island trio (Samberg, Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) go episode by episode through their time on SNL and every Digital Short they created, with funny (and sometimes brutal) honesty about what worked and what didn’t. They also talk about the episodes those shorts were a part of in greater detail, including standout sketches, ones that bombed, and ones that got cut.
