Pouring One Out for Bryan Fuller’s Friday the 13th Series (Damn It)
The Hannibal creator's exit from Crystal Lake is a big loss for the Friday the 13th franchise and for horror TV in general.
It felt too good to be true. And it was.
Earlier this afternoon, Bryan Fuller tweeted a thread explaining he and co-showrunner Jim Danger Gray were no longer involved in Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th TV series he’d been developing the past two years. Per Fuller, “For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material.”
Indicating that what he required from the studio was not what he received, Fuller wrote, “Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with. These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me.”
I’m guessing there will be some reports in the days to come that get more dishy with what exactly occurred that led to this, but when I read the news, it was with a mixture of a resigned “Of course this is how it ended up…” and an exasperated “Damn it, look what we could have had!”
