In Select Theaters and on Digital on October 3
Considering it stars Elisabeth Moss, an acclaimed, two-time Emmy-award winner whose last horror movie, 2020’s The Invisible Man, was a well received hit (despite opening just before Covid shutdowns), alongside a likable, longtime star in the form of Kate Hudson, Shell’s getting a suspiciously quiet debut, opening in “select” (which is to say a tiny handful) of theaters this weekend along with a simultaneous Digital release. And that may make you think there’s something wrong with it… which is kinda-sorta the case, though it’s by no means a disaster.
However, it’s a very messy movie that starts out strong and then fails to deliver in the long run, even as the story escalates. And though it’s essentially just an unfortunate coincidence of timing, unavoidable comparisons to a buzzy success story from the past year probably added to trepidation from Paramount, who are releasing it under their Republic label.
