Loving Y2K, Feeling Exhausted by Dexter and Appreciating the Holidays at Universal
Thoughts on a recent comedy bomb, the never-ending revivals of a once-beloved TV show, and a holiday makeover at a local theme park.
Some weekend grab bagging here, as I run down my thoughts on the recent release of the A24 comedy Y2K, the tarnished legacy of Dexter, and a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood’s holiday offerings.
Y2K and Knowing Your Cult is Out There, Somewhere
Y2K opened in theaters last weekend and promptly was a clear financial bomb. With a 45% Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie is hardly being viewed by many critics as an overlooked gem either, and, just incidentally speaking, the couple of friends I know who also have seen it were not impressed.
But when I went to see it a few days after it opened, an interesting thing occurred: I loved it, I laughed hard throughout it, and — as luck would have it, especially considering its box office — I saw it with a decent-ish crowd (maybe half full in a small auditorium) who were very appreciative and also laughing a ton.
